Sick birds cannot develop to their full genetic potential so health programs play a central role in the production schedule.<br \/>\nHealthy hens are disease-free or, at least, can support and deal with the diseases that are present in their environment.<br \/>\nBiosecurity is key to keeping the flock free of pathogen agents or, at least, reducing their presence. Flock immunity is the corner stone that prepares hens to handle the threat of disease. This relates not only to the vaccination program but also to the hen\u2019s physical status.<br \/>\nIf hens are inmuno-suppressed due to underfeeding, stress or other reasons (mycotoxins, chemicals) it will be di\ufb03cult to cope with diseases even if the hens have been vaccinated. Biosecurity can be de\ufb01ned as all the procedures put in place to prevent pathogens infecting hens and spreading to other poultry farms.<br \/>\nTo be e\ufb00ective, a biosecurity program should be implemented in a very practical and structured way. An e\ufb00ective biosecurity program is well-adapted to the production structures and well-understood by all the actors (sta\ufb00, production managers, external suppliers, veterinarians, general manager etc.) at the farm. If certain actors do not take biosecurity seriously and fail to follow the procedures, the e\ufb00orts of the others will not be rewarded.<br \/>\nIt is essential to apply procedures systematically. Sporadic application of a biosecurity program will not work.<\/p>\n<h2>Biosecurity Types<\/h2>\n<h3>Conceptual biosecurity<\/h3>\n<p>This is the biosecurity related to the <strong>farm design and its location<\/strong> of the farm and its surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>Ideally farms should be situated away from:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"milista1\">\n<li>other poultry farms (including backyard<br \/>\nfarms)<\/li>\n<li>Other farms (other species)<\/li>\n<li><span data-cmtooltip=\"<div class=glossaryItemBody>&lt;strong&gt;Live bird market&lt;\/strong&gt;: food markets where customers can select a live bird to slaughter and bring it home or exhibition markets where birds from different areas gather in this meeting point<\/div>\" class=\"glossaryLink\"> Live bird markets <\/span><\/li>\n<li>Hatcheries<\/li>\n<li>Slaughterhouses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If these kind of facilities are near to the farm, structural and operational biosecurity should be improved.<br \/>\nIf possible, new farms should be constructed in biosecure locations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row padded autogrid\">\n<div class=\"col\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f17.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"col\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f17-c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Structural biosecurity<\/h3>\n<p>This is the biosecurity related to the physical structures used at the farm to prevent the introduction or spread of diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Important components include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"milista1\">\n<li>Perimeter fences<\/li>\n<li>Surrounding buffer zone<\/li>\n<li><span data-cmtooltip=\"<div class=glossaryItemBody>&lt;strong&gt;Bird-proof elements&lt;\/strong&gt;: all kind so systems reducing the entrance and presence of the wild birds around the farm. They can be physical, like nets or more sophisticated ones like sounds or dummy birds similar to falcons<\/div>\" class=\"glossaryLink\"> Bird-proof elements <\/span><\/li>\n<li>Entrance doors<\/li>\n<li>Disinfectant system in entrance door<\/li>\n<li>Shower or black\/white room<\/li>\n<li><span data-cmtooltip=\"<div class=glossaryItemBody>&lt;strong&gt;Boots bath&lt;\/strong&gt;: points of cleaning and disinfection of the walking gear at the entrance to the critical areas to avoid carrying contamination from dirty areas to clean areas.<\/div>\" class=\"glossaryLink\"> Boots baths <\/span><\/li>\n<li>Work clothing and footwear<\/li>\n<li>Feed storehouse or silos<\/li>\n<li>Dead bird disposal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"row padded autogrid\">\n<div class=\"col\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f17-a.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"col\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f17-d.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Operational biosecurity<\/h3>\n<p>This is the biosecurity related to how work on the farm should be done to prevent the introduction or spread of diseases.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"milista1\">\n<li>People are the key element to success here.<\/li>\n<li>Good communication, which implies training, is essential to improve operational biosecurity.<\/li>\n<li>Clear and written biosecurity protocol should be available for all the staff having contact with the farms.<\/li>\n<li>Normally the simplest rules work better than the complicated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"row padded autogrid\">\n<div class=\"col\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f17-b.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"col\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f17-e.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Isolation<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f3.svg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Visit restriction<\/h3>\n<p>Only essential visits with a clear purpose should be permitted.<br \/>\nAll visits\/visitors should be considered as a risk for the flock.<\/p>\n<h3>Visitor register<\/h3>\n<p>A logbook should be available for visitors. All visitors must \ufb01ll in their name, date of visit,<br \/>\npurpose of visit, last visited farm and vehicle license number.<\/p>\n<h3>Visitor policy<\/h3>\n<p>Visitors coming from another external farm on the same day must not be permitted entry. Visitors from sites of a disease out-break are absolutely forbidden entry. If several company<br \/>\nfarms are visited on the same day,<br \/>\nthe sequence must be from younger flocks to older ones.<\/p>\n<h3>Work clothing<\/h3>\n<p>Speci\ufb01c work clothing must be available for staff and visitors.<\/p>\n<h3>Material \/equipment disinfection<\/h3>\n<p>All material must be disinfected prior to entry to<br \/>\nthe farm. This is even more important if the material comes from another farm.<\/p>\n<h3>Vehicle disinfection<\/h3>\n<p>Vehicles must be disinfected prior to their entry to the farm. Bird-proof houses can be constructed using special netting.<br \/>\nBird&#8217;s faeces are also very infectious<br \/>\nmaterial. Direct or indirect contact should<br \/>\nbe completely avoided.<\/p>\n<h3>Insects and other<\/h3>\n<p>Establish an insecticide program.<br \/>\nManure management is also very important to prevent flies.<br \/>\nMites can be very damaging to the hens overall health status. This is particularly the case with Red Mite and Northern Fowl Mite.<br \/>\nSee its control in the Technical Tips.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mybox\" class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"autogrid\">\n<div class=\"col\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f19.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"col\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f19-a.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"col\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f19-b.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Pest control<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f7.svg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Information, meetings and training days should be provided to staff and other people working on the farm to ensure that they understand, respect and collaborate in the biosecurity program.<br \/>\nIt is also very important to ensure staff do not raise poultry at home or come into contact with other birds (pigeons, hawks, ducks, \u2026).<\/p>\n<h2>Feed and water<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f4.svg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Feed<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce45 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f20.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nThe quality of raw materials and <a href=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/late-production-up-to-75-weeks\/#quality\">hygiene<\/a> measures at the feed mill are vital to produce pathogen-free feed. Adding disinfectants is also recommended. Feed transport and feed storage should be controlled to avoid contamination after feed mill delivery.<\/p>\n<h3>Water<\/h3>\n<p>Chlorine or an alternative disinfectant should be added to drinking water. It has a dual purpose: firstly preventing the introduction of pathogens by water and secondly reducing water recontamination while it is in the house pipeline.<\/p>\n<h2>Waste disposal<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f5.svg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Waste removal and disposal is critical because waste material can be heavily contaminated.<\/p>\n<h3>Manure<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp reduce45 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f21.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nManure should be removed and disposed of at least 3 km away from the site. Make sure that no other farms dispose of their manure within a 3 km radius of your farm.<\/p>\n<h3>Dead birds<\/h3>\n<p>Dead birds container<br \/>\nDead birds should be removed from houses on a daily basis and stored away from the poultry houses.<br \/>\nDifferent methods are available to destroy the dead birds hygienically. If dead birds are moved from the farm, take extreme care during transport:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"milista1\">\n<li>Never permit transport of dead birds to enter the farm.<\/li>\n<li>Only permit dead birds to be collected outside the farm.<\/li>\n<li>Never have personal contact with people handling dead birds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Cleaning &amp; Disinfection protocol<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f8.svg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If a severe infestation of mites or other parasites has occurred, take extra precautionary measures to eliminate or exclude the presence<br \/>\nof pests.<\/p>\n<div id=\"table31\"><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f9.svg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Pullet replacement<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f10.svg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In order to achieve this, the breeder flock should remain disease-free.<br \/>\nSampling and analysis should be encouraged to check that one-day old chicks are not contaminated.<br \/>\nH&amp;N grandparent stock are free of lymphoid leukosis, <em>Mycoplasma gallisepticum, Mycoplasma synoviae, Salmonella pullorum, Salmonella gallinarum, Sallmonella enteritidis, Salmonella thyphimurium<\/em> and other Salmonella species.<br \/>\nTake into account that transport crates, trucks and other equipment can be infected with pathogens or infested with parasites.<br \/>\nPrevious cleaning and disinfection of all of them is strongly recommended.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"Vaccination_Programs\">Vaccination Programs<\/h2>\n<p>Specific recommendations for individual farms are not possible, but the sample vaccination program (table 32) is intended as a very general guideline for vaccinations which are needed on most farms worldwide. Additional vaccinations for coccidiosis, Escherichia coli, Avian Influenza and the variant strains of other disease-causing agents may also be needed. These decisions, however, need to be made on a farm-by-farm basis after careful consideration of the risk factors involved which include, but are not limited to: previous exposure, geographic location, vaccination and exposure of neighboring flocks, state regulations and endemic disease-causing factors. Ask for an adapted vaccine program from your local veterinarian.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"centrarimg imgwp alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/hn-int.com\/chickipediamedia\/layers\/biosecurity\/f11.svg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Administering vaccines in practice<\/h2>\n<p>Administering the vaccines in practice is just as important as the vaccine program design.<br \/>\nAll this involves is simply following a procedure that is clearly defined by the vaccine manufacturer. However, mistakes are still often made. To avoid errors, check and audit these procedures regularly.
